Adventures in Potty Training

Today I took the boys out to run errands and I took the plunge. Levi wore his "big boy underwear." And, he stayed dry. I've been warned that the automatic flushing toilets are pretty traumatic, so I opted to bring our little potty with us. Just thinking about having both boys in a public restroom together seems like it could be pretty traumatic for me :) Levi sat down on the potty beside my car in two of the grocery store parking lots and went like a champ. Way to go little guy. He still is a bit hesitant to go number 2 on the potty, though. He knows that once he does 10 times, he will get a kite. He is pretty excited about that. So far, we've got four. He keeps telling me, "I need privacy, momma" and I find that to be just a wee bit cute. No problem little guy. And when he has success he shouts, "AWESOME! GO TEAM WICAR!" This almost 2 and a half thing is way better than just turned 2. I keep saying that, but really, it just keeps getting better and better. I love my boys. If you have any tips on potty-training, please tell them to me...I'm new at this :)

  3. you ladies!!! nice to have connected you lovely friends via this cyber world. if only we could just sit down for a little coffee in the same room.
i've not finished my first potty training job; we're still in diapers at night. no tips other than to jump on it when they're interested. i also introduced it way early... i think it helped but it was a lot of work. to finish the job i had to do it when i had family in town who could help me be consistent. anyways. looks like you're doing great, kate. why didn't i think to bring the potty in the car. there were definitely times that were trying in public facilities. love.

  4. Hi Kate! On the day I potty trained Esther, if she had an accident (of course I took her to the potty and wiped up the mess but after that and trying not to let too much time lapse from her accident), we would run to the potty from where she had her accident. I would walk her to the place she had her accident and say something like, "When you get the feeling you have to pee RUN to POTTY!!!" and we would run to the potty, then go back and do it again and again. I read you need to do it about 6-9 times for each accident. It was great exercise for the day! :) They said it would help with memory on what to do with the "pee-feeling". I think it helped.
Also, remember the goal of potty-training is for Levi to stay DRY. So, also on the day of potty training every 30 min (seriously) I would ask Esther, "Are you dry?". If she was it was played up HUGE! She got the same reward as if she went potty (sticker) because staying dry should be rewarded too. Now when we are driving or on the other side of the store from the bathroom and she says those words "Mommy, I have to go potty!" I ask her to stay dry. She will like talk to herself, "I stay dry. I stay dry." And we haven't really had a problem. So far only one accident out and about since Jan.
Hope this helps! Potty training is hard and you are doing GREAT!!! Way to go Team Wicar! :)
